Advance Tax Installment Due Dates
Pay As You Earn โ Four Installments
Advance tax is paid in four installments across the year on a cumulative basis. Each date requires you to have paid a minimum percentage of your total advance tax liability:
By 15 September: at least 45% (cumulative)
By 15 December: at least 75% (cumulative)
By 15 March: 100% of advance tax
Advance Tax โ Who Pays & When
1. Who Must Pay Advance Tax
- Salaried employees whose employer deducts full TDS usually don't need to โ but you must pay advance tax on extra income like capital gains, interest, rent or freelance work.
- Business owners and professionals whose income isn't fully covered by TDS.
- Freelancers and consultants earning beyond the TDS deducted by clients.
2. Who is Exempt
A resident senior citizen (60+) who does not have any income from business or profession is exempt from advance tax โ they can pay everything as self-assessment tax at the time of filing.
3. Presumptive Taxpayers โ 44AD / 44ADA
Taxpayers under the presumptive scheme (Section 44AD for small businesses, 44ADA for professionals) get a simplified rule: they pay their entire advance tax in a single installment by 15 March, with no earlier installments.
4. Interest for Default โ Sections 234B & 234C
- Section 234C โ interest at 1% per month for shortfall in any individual installment (deferment). Charged for 3 months on the first three installments and 1 month on the last.
- Section 234B โ interest at 1% per month if you pay less than 90% of your total tax by 31 March, running from 1 April of the assessment year until you pay.
5. How to Pay
Advance tax is paid online through the Income Tax e-filing portal (e-Pay Tax) or authorised bank challans using Challan No. 280. Keep the challan / BSR code and serial number to enter in your ITR.
Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Consider Vikram, a freelancer, for FY 2025-26:
- Estimated total tax for the year: โน1,20,000
- TDS already deducted by clients: โน20,000
How the Advance Tax is Worked Out:
- Advance tax payable: โน1,20,000 โ โน20,000 = โน1,00,000 (above โน10,000, so applicable).
- By 15 June (15%): โน15,000
- By 15 September (45%): โน45,000 cumulative โ pay โน30,000 more
- By 15 December (75%): โน75,000 cumulative โ pay โน30,000 more
- By 15 March (100%): โน1,00,000 cumulative โ pay the final โน25,000
Result: Vikram deposits โน15,000, โน30,000, โน30,000 and โน25,000 on the four due dates. Paying each installment on time avoids any interest under Section 234C, and paying at least 90% by year-end avoids 234B.
