Complete Guide

Advance Tax โ€” Who Pays & When

๐Ÿ’ก Threshold: Advance tax applies only if your total tax liability, after reducing TDS/TCS, is โ‚น10,000 or more in the financial year. Below this, you can simply pay the full amount as self-assessment tax while filing your return.

1. Who Must Pay Advance Tax

  • Salaried employees whose employer deducts full TDS usually don't need to โ€” but you must pay advance tax on extra income like capital gains, interest, rent or freelance work.
  • Business owners and professionals whose income isn't fully covered by TDS.
  • Freelancers and consultants earning beyond the TDS deducted by clients.

2. Who is Exempt

A resident senior citizen (60+) who does not have any income from business or profession is exempt from advance tax โ€” they can pay everything as self-assessment tax at the time of filing.

3. Presumptive Taxpayers โ€” 44AD / 44ADA

Taxpayers under the presumptive scheme (Section 44AD for small businesses, 44ADA for professionals) get a simplified rule: they pay their entire advance tax in a single installment by 15 March, with no earlier installments.

4. Interest for Default โ€” Sections 234B & 234C

  • Section 234C โ€” interest at 1% per month for shortfall in any individual installment (deferment). Charged for 3 months on the first three installments and 1 month on the last.
  • Section 234B โ€” interest at 1% per month if you pay less than 90% of your total tax by 31 March, running from 1 April of the assessment year until you pay.

5. How to Pay

Advance tax is paid online through the Income Tax e-filing portal (e-Pay Tax) or authorised bank challans using Challan No. 280. Keep the challan / BSR code and serial number to enter in your ITR.

Walkthrough Example

Step-by-Step Calculation Example

Consider Vikram, a freelancer, for FY 2025-26:

  • Estimated total tax for the year: โ‚น1,20,000
  • TDS already deducted by clients: โ‚น20,000

How the Advance Tax is Worked Out:

  1. Advance tax payable: โ‚น1,20,000 โˆ’ โ‚น20,000 = โ‚น1,00,000 (above โ‚น10,000, so applicable).
  2. By 15 June (15%): โ‚น15,000
  3. By 15 September (45%): โ‚น45,000 cumulative โ†’ pay โ‚น30,000 more
  4. By 15 December (75%): โ‚น75,000 cumulative โ†’ pay โ‚น30,000 more
  5. By 15 March (100%): โ‚น1,00,000 cumulative โ†’ pay the final โ‚น25,000

Result: Vikram deposits โ‚น15,000, โ‚น30,000, โ‚น30,000 and โ‚น25,000 on the four due dates. Paying each installment on time avoids any interest under Section 234C, and paying at least 90% by year-end avoids 234B.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has to pay advance tax?+
Anyone whose total tax liability for the year, after deducting TDS/TCS, is โ‚น10,000 or more must pay advance tax. This commonly applies to freelancers, business owners, and salaried people with significant extra income from capital gains, interest, or rent. Resident senior citizens with no business income are exempt.
What are the advance tax due dates for FY 2025-26?+
For regular taxpayers: 15% by 15 June 2025, 45% (cumulative) by 15 September 2025, 75% by 15 December 2025, and 100% by 15 March 2026. Presumptive taxpayers under 44AD/44ADA pay 100% in a single installment by 15 March 2026.
What happens if I miss an advance tax installment?+
You'll pay interest under Section 234C at 1% per month on the shortfall for that installment. If your total advance tax paid by 31 March is less than 90% of the assessed tax, additional interest under Section 234B applies at 1% per month from 1 April of the assessment year until you clear the dues.
Is TDS adjusted against advance tax?+
Yes. Advance tax is calculated on your total tax liability after subtracting the TDS and TCS already deducted. If your entire tax is covered by TDS, your advance tax liability may be nil.
Do salaried employees need to pay advance tax?+
Usually not for salary income, because the employer deducts TDS every month. But if you earn other income โ€” such as capital gains from shares/property, interest, rental income, or freelance fees โ€” on which sufficient tax isn't deducted, you must pay advance tax on that portion.
Can I pay all my advance tax at once?+
You can pay more than the minimum at any installment, and paying early is fine. However, paying the whole amount only at the last installment (or after) when earlier installments were due will attract Section 234C interest for the earlier shortfalls. Presumptive taxpayers are the exception โ€” they are allowed to pay 100% by 15 March.
